The History of Sport-Thieme

1949

Do it yourself!

The success story of Sport-Thieme began as a one-man show in a small attic. Frustrated by the long delivery times of ordered sports equipment, carpenter Karl-Heinz Thieme decided to bring his own product ideas to life. Today, the warehouse alone is 500 times the size of the attic where it all started.

1950

May We Introduce Ourselves?

One year after founding the company, Karl-Heinz Thieme released the first promotional leaflet, laying the groundwork for what would later become extensive product catalogs.

1958

Running Out of Space

What started as a one-man show had grown into a thriving business with eight employees — with Karl-Heinz’s wife, Erika Thieme, also pitching in energetically. The family apartment served as the office, warehouse, and living space, quickly becoming overcrowded. The only solution? Build a new facility!

1959

From Living Room to Workshop

ust 300 meters from their original home, new warehouse spaces were constructed. Remarkably, the original buildings still stand today: the former living room is now a conference room, and the old postal dispatch area serves as the company canteen. This year also marked a major milestone — annual sales surpassed the 1-million Deutsche Mark mark for the first time.

1961

Becoming a Limited Partnership (KG)

The sole proprietorship of Sport-Thieme was transformed into a limited partnership (Kommanditgesellschaft, KG). Company founder Karl-Heinz Thieme became the general partner, while his wife, Erika Thieme, took on the role of limited partner. In 1966, their son, Hans-Rudolf Thieme, joined as a limited partner as well.

1962

Bringing in a System

With an ever-growing range of products, the need for additional storage space became constant. To streamline operations and enhance customer service, Sport-Thieme introduced a product numbering system for the first time in 1962.

1963

Our Own Workshops

Up until now, the team had been working in leased workshops. But finally, the carpenters, locksmiths, and painters moved into their own dedicated facilities. This new setup allowed for even more efficient and coordinated collaboration.

1971

Everything Under One Roof

Sport-Thieme rented a 6,000 square meter warehouse from the Federal Property Office, consolidating smaller, scattered storage facilities into one centralized location. The company’s workforce nearly quintupled, with 40 employees now working together towards common goals.

1979

Dr. Hans-Rudolf Thieme

A New Era for the Family Business

Dr. Hans-Rudolf Thieme officially joined the company, introducing electronic data processing (EDP) into inventory management. From this point on, invoicing, statistical analysis, and marketing coordination were managed electronically, marking a significant technological leap forward.

This was followed by an expansion in 1990, adding a 2,700 square meter warehouse, a 250 square meter office area, and enhanced logistics facilities.
To optimize large-scale shipping, another 2,700 square meter hall was constructed in 1994.
